Political Science Degree

Political science is a diverse and interdisciplinary field of study. Political scientists specialize in areas including public policy, government, international relations, electoral politics, campaigning, and comparative politics. Graduates of political science degree programs often work for polling firms, nonprofit organizations, newspapers, law firms, government agencies, colleges and universities, and campaign organizations.

Most students enrolled in political science degree programs will be required to complete courses in research methodology, statistics, comparative politics, international relations, political parties, and Supreme Court decisions. Although individuals with bachelor's degrees in political science can obtain entry- level jobs, most political science related job openings are filled by people holding master's degrees or Ph.Ds. Those interested in university-level teaching and research positions are required to hold a doctorate degree.

While a bachelor's degree in political science qualifies students for entry-level career positions, most students who earn a bachelor's degree in political science do so with the intention of pursuing a graduate degree. An undergraduate degree in political science is an excellent stepping stone into most law schools and MBA programs. Many political science undergrads also pursue graduate degrees in journalism or education. Political science teaches students how to think critically, write effectively and coherently and communicate effectively.

Many colleges and universities now offer political science degrees that can be completed entirely online. Some school offers programs that combone both online study with campus attendance.
