UCSF Graduate School of Nursing

The UCSF Graduate School of Nursing has consistently been ranked among the top nursing schools in the nation. In 2012, it was ranked fourth in the nation among all nursing schools by U.S. News & World Report. In nursing specialties that are rated (adult nursing, surgical nurse, family nurse practitioner, mental health nurse and adult nurse practitioner) UCSF nursing schools was in the top 10 nationwide. Other highly ranked programs include the community/public health nursing, geriatrics practitioner and pediatric nurse practitioner. In terms of research funding provided by NIH, the school ranks at the top of the pack.

UCSF offers the following nursing degrees and programs:

Master of Science (M.S.)

The M.S. in Nursing program at UCSF is designed to prepare students to become leaders within the field of nursing. Students will prepare for advanced practice careers as practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse-midwifes, administrators, educators, and consultants.

Masters Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN)

The MEPN program is a 3-year program that leads to a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. This program is designed for student who have a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing. Graduates of this program will be prepared as advanced practice nurses (RNs with advanced clinical skills).

Ph.D., Nursing

This program is designed for nursing professionals and students who want to become scientists and conduct research in academia and medicine. Most graduates of this program pursue careers as academic faculty of clinical researchers. Curriculum focuses on scholar thinking and solving problems relating to the discipline of nursing.

Ph.D., Sociology

The Phd in Sociology offered through the UCSF School of Nursing is a doctoral program the focuses on the sociology of illness, health, biomedicine, and health care systems. Area of study include aging and disability, health policy and economics, technology and medicine studies, and race/gender and health inequalities.
