Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, more commonly referred to as Virginia Tech, is a public university based in Blacksburg, Virginia. In addition to this main campus, Virginia Tech maintains facilities in six regions throughout the state of Virginia, as well as a study-abroad site in Switzerland. Virginia Tech is the state's most comprehensive research university, enrolling over 31,000 students and offering 225 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Virginia Tech is organized into seven undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. There are 65 bachelor's degree programs available through the undergraduate colleges, 160 master's and doctoral degree programs available through the Graduate School, and one professional degree available through the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Virginia Tech's undergraduate colleges are as follows: the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, the College of Engineering, the College of Science, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, the College of Natural Resources and Environment, the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, and the Pamplin College of Business.

Through Virginia Tech's Extended Learning and Enrollment Services department students seeking a distance learning program are extended the opportunity to earn an accredited master's degree or post-graduate certificate entirely online. Online master's degrees are offered in instructional technology, information technology, ocean engineering, political science, natural resources, agricultural and life sciences, computer engineering, civil engineering , systems engineering, environmental and earth sciences, electrical engineering and aerospace engineering.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Virginia Tech the 25th best public university, and the 69th best national university, in the United States. Other than California, Virginia is the only state to have three or more schools ranked among the Top 25 Public Universities.
