One of the oldest and largest of Alabama’s universities, the University of Alabama (UA) is public rsearch university located in the city of Tuscaloosa. It is the flagship institution of the University of Alabama System. Through its 13 academic schools and colleges students can pursue a bachelor's, master's, education specialist, or doctorate degree. The law school at UA is the only public law school in the state of Alabama. UA also offers several other programs not available elsewhere in the state, including programs in anthropology, music, social work, metallurgical engineering and romance languages, among others.

While the university offers graduate degrees and professional programs, it is primarily and undergraduate liberal arts school. It is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Many of the university's academic programs focus in STEM fields and it supports “high level” of research activity.

The University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa has a unique honors program that recognizes academic achievement at various levels. Students who graduate with a graduate point average of at least 3.5 receive Latin honors. Students who graduate with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.7 graduate Cum laude. Those who graduate with a GPA of 3.7 or higher but less than 3.9 graduate Magna cum laude. Finally, students with a GPA of 3.9 or higher are conferred the highest honor of Summa cum laude.

For non-traditional students and working adults seeking a more flexible and convenient learning option, The University of Alabama offers distance learning online degree programs. Online degrees are offered in various fields of study including criminal justice, operations management, law, engineering, nursing, library studies, education, and engineering, to name just a few. Online degrees are available at the bachelor's and master’s levels. Student participating in a traditional college degree program can supplement their campus-based studies by completing some of their coursework online.

The U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Alabama consistently among the top 50 public universities in the United States. In 2014, the university was also ranked 88th among National Universities in the public schools category. Based on value and affordability, the university was recently ranked 42nd in the nation by Forbes magazine.

UA is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The majority of UA's student body are four-year, full-time undergraduates. The university's undergraduate programs focus on the liberal arts and on professional areas of study.
