Duke University

Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke University is a private university. Duke has three adjacent campuses spanning more than 8,500 acres. They also offer a marine lab in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Duke is a major research university. They have been known to spend over a billion dollars on research in one year. Their athletic teams (the Blue Devils) are highly competitive and have won 15 national titles, four of which were won by their men’s basketball team. Duke is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world.

Only about eleven percent of applicants are admitted to one of Duke’s programs each year. This ranks Duke as one of the most difficult universities to get into. Typically, only students with a very high academic ranking on the high school level are accepted.

Duke offers about 50 majors in the areas of sciences and arts. The school also offers 50 minors and four engineering majors. Students are also able to develop their own interdisciplinary major in sciences and arts through Program II. Engineering students have the opportunity to create their own major through the program called IDEAS. Duke offers about 25 certificate programs. Students can work toward a major, with up to three minors or certificates or a second major. The majority of students at Duke are enrolled in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences (about 85%) while the minority study in the Pratt School of Engineering.

Duke is also know for the amount and quality of research generated by its students and faculty each year. As of the 2012 fiscal year, Duke's research expenditures exceeded $1 billion. In terms of research, Duke is ranked 7th in the nation. It's Medical Center received nearly $300 million in funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2013, one of the largest contributions made that year.

For non-traditional students seeking a distance learning option, Duke offers a variety of online courses and degree programs that can be completed off campus. Online programs are offered through the universities department of Continuing Studies.
