Calhoun Community College

With its campus in Decatur, Alabama, Calhoun Community College is a two-year college that awards certificates and associate degrees. It is listed as the largest community college in the Alabama Community College System. It’s open-admission policy, along with comprehensive fields of study, make Calhoun a great choice for area students to continue their education and prepare for transfer to four-year college or university in pursuit of a bachelor's degree.

Calhoun has an annual enrollment of more than 11,300 students. As one of the largest community colleges in the region the Calhoun offers a large selection of over 100 degrees, both associate and career/certificates, in various areas of study. Calhoun’s 300 full-time staff includes more than 130 faculty members. A large number of the faculty – as many as 80 percent – hold a master’s degree and 15 percent have been awarded a doctorate.

Calhoun awards both Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in various disciplines. The Associate of Science degree is intended for individuals who plan on pursuing a four-year bachelor's degree after graduation. The Associate of Applied Science degree is designed for students who plan on entering the workforce directly following graduation. Unlike the A.S., the A.A.S. Is not designed as a transfer degree. Students who think they may want to complete a bachelor's degree at some point, should earn a A.S.

Areas of study at Calhoun Community College include, but are not limited to, Accounting, Child Development, Criminal Justice, Dental Assisting, Drafting Technology, Electrical Technology, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Art, HVAC, Mathematics, Aviation, Psychology, Robotics, Security and Business, among many others.

Calhoun offers several distance learning options, including online degrees (which they call “Web courses”). Students interested in working toward completing their degree online can complete fully online courses or “hybrid” courses which combine online learning with campus-based classroom instruction. Most degrees and programs at Calhoun, even online degrees, require some campus attendance and participation.
