Associate Degree in Education
Most entry-level jobs in teaching or education require at minimum a bachelor's degree, and most these days require a master's degree. However, earning an associate's degree can still be a good idea. Earning an associate degree in education qualifies students for career opportunities as a teachers assistant or to pursue higher education opportunities at a four-year college or university. Most education associate's degrees are designed as transfer degrees for students who plan on enrolling in a bachelor's degree program upon completion of their associate's degree. If earning a bachelor's degree is your objective it's important you earn your associate's degree at a regionally accredited community college so your credits can be applied toward your bachelor's degree.

The only prerequisite for enrolling in an associate's degree program is a high school diploma or GED. Some school will require that application complete prerequisite courses in English, a foreign language, social science and/or mathematics. Once enrolled, students can look forward to taking classes in child development, fundamentals of education, elementary education, math education, reading education, education psychology and education technology, among others.

Bachelor's Degree in Education
A Bachelor's Degree in Education is typically the minimum educational requirement for becoming a teacher. It's also the minimum requirement for many other entry-level career positions. Earn a bachelor's degree in education typically takes four years, unless you're in an accelerated program--in which case you may be able to get done in 3 years. Most bachelor's degree will provide you with a broad liberal arts education, training in core areas of education, as well as the opportunity to receive specialized instruction in a specific education specialty (e.g., special education, elementary education, etc.) Most bachelor's level education offer curricula designed to focus on both the content and pedagogy of teaching.

Earning your bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or univerity is the best way to get your teaching career off to a good start. In fact, most major colleges offer BA programs in education tailored to meet state licensing and certification requirements for becoming a teacher or work in a public education setting. Teacher certification requirements vary by state, so you'll want of contact your State Department of Education before enrolling in a bachelor of education program, if it's your goal to become a teacher.

Master's Degree in Education
Earning a master's degree in education provides a strong foundation for many career opportunities in education. In fact, today a master's degree is required for many education positions. Many postsecondary education positions, including teacher, student counselor and administrator have a minimum requirement of a master's degree. Since working teachers and educators are the likely candidates for a master's in education, many school now offer these programs entirely online. Earning a master's degree in education entirely online is a convenient, flexible way to position yourself for career advancement opportunities in the field of education.
