The university offers degree programs designed for students in their junior and senior years of college, which cover over thirty majors offered through the university's schools of Business, Education and Arts & Sciences. The university also offers various education tracts for licensure and certification as a teacher.

Originally established as an all-female school in 1822, called Athens Female Academy, it was taken over by the Methodist Church twenty years later. The name was then changed to Athens Female Institute, which it remained for almost 90 years. Around the turn of the century the school became a co-ed institution and the school's name was changed Athens College. Nearly 45 years later, control of the school was taken over by the state of Alabama and the school's name was changed again, this time to Athens State College. In 1998, the college took on another name to reflect its new status as a university, Athens State University. In recent years, a Board of Trustees has been established as Athens has become an individual, self-reliant upper-level college.

Athens State University currently does offers the opportunity for its students to complete degrees or courses online. The university offers 13 degree program options and various certificates that allow students the ability to earn a degree entirely online or complete courses online toward their campus-based degree program. To participate in online programs students must meet all admissions requirements.

Financial aid options are available for student pursuing an accredited degree program. Those pursuing a certificate will not be eligible for federally funded financial aid packages.
