Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (or VUSN) operates in cooperation with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The Vanderbilt Medical Center is a respected teaching hospital, well-known for its innovation and research in the area of electronic medical records. The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the School of Nursing are both ranked among the top 20 in the nation.

The goal and mission of the School of Nursing is to graduate nurses with advanced degrees we are ready to take on the role of practitioner, educator, research or leader. Because of this, the School of Nursing converted to a graduate school in the late 1980’s to provide its students with the highest quality of nursing education available. Many of the school’s Master's degree programs offer a large array of opportunities to pursue targeted training in a nursing specialty. The Bridge program is one of the school’s most innovative programs. Only students with an educational background in a field other than nursing are admitted into this program. Students in the Bridge program work toward an advanced practice nursing degree. PhD programs are available in health services research, nursing sciences – clinical and a Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Currently, the Vanderbilt School of Nursing is ranked #15 in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report. Many of its individual nursing programs are also nationally ranked among the top 20. Vanderbilt University School of Nursing offers the following degrees and specialties:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) - this degree program is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses to provide direct patient care everywhere nurses are needed. This program offers a large array of specialties.

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) - this degree offers an alternative to a research-focused doctorate. The degree focuses on evidence-based practice. You must have a BSN or MSN degree to qualify for this program.

  • PhD in Nursing Science
  • - this program prepares students to become educators and researchers at major universities.
  • Post-Master's Certificates - available in various nurse practitioner specialties (neonatal, pediatric, acute care, etc.)
