Hastings College of Law

Located in San Francisco, California, the University of California's Hastings College of Law (UC Hastings) is a public law school, and the oldest law school on the West Coast. Despite being affiliated with the University of California System, UC Hastings does not share its campus with any other graduate or undergraduate departments or programs.

Most students at UC Hastings enroll in the institution's Juris Doctor program, which takes three years to complete. Students of this program may choose one of seven areas of concentration: criminal law, public interest law, family law, civil litigation, taxation, international law, and the recently-established concentration in intellectual property law. The Juris Doctor program is organized into a traditional three-year agenda. In the first year, students take one elective course in addition to their required courses. In the last two years, students may take any course, and may supplement or substitute their studies with judicial clinics, study abroad experiences, or judicial internships or externships. In addition to the Juris Doctor program, UC Hastings also offers a LL.M degree in U.S. Legal Studies. This program takes one year to complete, and is designed for students holding law degrees from foreign institutions.

Students of UC Hastings can expect to pay $71,247 (California residents) or $77,247 (non-residents) per year. This figure includes tuition, fees, and living expenses. Debt-financed cost of attending UC Hastings for three years, as estimated by The Law School Transparency, is $296,028.
